So far...

Edinburgh College of Art's new students show great potential in their first collaborative show

“So far… so confused” is the resounding message from first year students of Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), and one that likely echoes up and down the country as young people settle into their first experiences of university. The group exhibition So Far… has embraced this collective confusion and channelled it into a collaborative show. 130 students have exhibited, organised and curated their work, which spans many different disciplines.
Those who have already experienced first year cannot help but feel a fond sense of nostalgia towards the work. Most students can relate to the feelings of blindly stumbling through the workload, whilst awkwardly forging new friendships and exploiting the newfound freedom. These themes are clearly expressed not only in the work itself, but also in the titles chosen by the students.
One of the exhibition's successes is the sense of a larger artistic community, breaking down the expected division between disciplines. The exhibition demonstrates a sophistication and openness to experiment, exemplified in Steph Suen’s work entitled 'So Far… I can’t say I have any regrets'. She has presented mundane everyday objects, referencing integral moments of her life. Displayed in chemical vials on a shelf, the work wouldn’t necessarily look out of place in a laboratory, blurring the lines between the objective and the subjective.
Malcolm Frazer’s 'So Far… debt is killing me!' stands out, refreshingly maintaining a sense of humour whilst tackling a serious issue. A blue figure is crushed comically beneath an enlarged metal stock graph, whilst to the side, a letter to his father displays a façade of niceties and underlying text reads “Can I have some money please, I will repay you somehow.”
Arts Complex, a non profit organisation promoting art education, has supported ECA’s first years in their first external exhibition. The exhibition displays a wealth of talent and a great promise for what is to come in the future, especially with such early integration between disciplines and a willingness to experiment.

Visiting the Exhibition

Tonight I took a friend to see the "so far" exhibition at around 8pm. I have been informed by the art director that visitors are only welcome up until 9pm.

Anyway the atmosphere was very peaceful with only a couple of other visitors and I thought it was great time to check out everybodies work without distraction and realised some very interesting details which I previously overlooked.

Following this satisfaction I would recommend that students give it a second look before Fridays eviction..

Opening night Speech

Sometime not long after 5pm on Friday the Principal of Edinburgh College of Art: Professor Ian Howard entertained students, tutors and guests.

The Performance

At around 6.35 on opening night 1st year student Donata Kiaunyte displayed a "so far" performance to an audience of around 22 people.
Seats had been reserved by interested tutors and the other seats were taken on a first come first serve basis. Donata is sorry for the people who were turned away at the door because she genuinely didn't expect so many people to show up and was not expecting to fill all the chairs which were set out.

Anyway the performance was captured on film so here it is.

Opening Day!

Hey there,
Currently I'm waiting for my dinner to cook,
I guess i'm running a little bit late because I promised I would be back at the exhibition for 4.00pm to help Donata rehearse her Performance.
Anyway I feel a bit excited, The Crits went well and resulted in some change which ultimately benefited the exhibition.

I just want to thank anyone who copied our URL from the exhibition and has since found this blog.

SOME MORE VIDEOS COMING SOON, I am going to produce more goods soon.. plenty to work with!

Don't worry be happy

After so much stressing I guess we could all do with a good laugh:

GO GO GO

find the perfect place and claim it as your own

a selection of work put up today
it will probably be moved around by the curators and look totally SPECTACULAR on friday.

a thank you

Filling the space

Cheesy video hey..
The migration is well underway, lots of drills, lots of floating things, lots of drawings, lots of random malark.

Much discussion, lots of curators randomly picking work up and moving it about.
Well done to Michael for organising the van and getting them to move faster.
Well done to whoever thought of splitting the gallery into 4 corners.
Thanks to anyone who gives me there time and thoughts to record. If anyone has anything they'd particularly like to put out there just let me know.
Some pretty cool stuff at the space, look forward to seeing the rest and getting more peopls to express their views.

The two Scott's open day interview!

Video recording peoples thoughts and expectations at the ECA open day!

thanks - the 2 Scott's

will it turn out the way you want?

I've pretty much accepted it won't turn out the way i want it to. Practice makes perfect I guess... just a few photos from 'So far...since you'.
An enlarged photo of my mum when she was pregnant with me, with text from a passage she wrote about how she felt about her pregnancy.

I've used hammered effect paper and pro marker pens, then printed over the top.
I really really want to learn how to print with big machines - silk screen, screen print, printmaking, typography etc. Best get myself down to the workshops!

Back from Daytona beach

Well now that we are back from surfing it up at Daytona I guess it's time to get this show on the road and thanks to Michael we have a van and driver to take our work on the road. At some point tomorrow everything must be complete or else the curators are going to start destroying people and in some cases themselves So get the work produced or I'll have nothing to document but the chalked outline where your body used to be.
Todays updates include; A Polish potato emerged from nowhere, A Rhino foot is now going to hold up a skyscraper, The world has been measured and is equal to about 999 billion hands or however much Louise told me, tomorrow morning toolkits are available at workshop from Nicola and I found out the roof is made from concrete so does anyone have any 50-100 millmetre hammer fixings?...
There is a currently a merger between Documentation groups taking place so stay tuned to find more video's which will possibly be better than the one below.. SO....

Sneak Preview from "So Far, the Documentary"

Day 10

A never-been-seen-before student sits in our studio constantly moaning about first year studies to Donata (who in comparison holds a very positive view towards first year)
Before this meeting of day and night there was a meeting of group 3/4 resources team. Main subjects - "who's supplying the wine?!"  "Who's sponsoring us?" and "the lack of communication" between resource and marketing groups.
To my relief Hlynur did not kill anybody on this occasion.
There is still some confusion as to whether work has to be done by Monday or Tuesday..
Donata has been rehearsing her performance at artspace while I'm still gluing wire to my dummy

Paper Bowls and Paper heads

Day 9 In the big first year studies house, The house is quiet as the majority of students choose to party on Daytona beach. Mary Claire is in the studio, she takes 1000 photos of other studiomates doing mundane things.
Hlynur frantically searches for other resource people, injurying 2 security guards and killing one cleaner in the process.
Ali, Anna and Tasos are in Pothouse 5 discussing what they would choose to improve themselves. Tasos chooses not to be so glum while also having a larger thing-me-jiggy.
Jade is in Pot house 6 wondering how to work on expressing her confusion about the briefs "So Far"
Joze makes a brief appearance only to take his lovely skyscraper away and give it a new coat.
Louise makes a late appearance to unveal her impressive steelwork.
Helvetica inspires Amy towards a font wonderland while I paint a dummy blue and fill it with wires..

So far so fucking good...

My Seventh Day Saga

I would just like to document on my latest quarrel with one of group 3/4's curators Joze Hicks. Yes It came to my attention this afternoon that Joze believes my piece although well underway should be half the size and therefore I should probably just cut it in half. I was informed that the curators had agreed that work should be "no larger than a human, no smaller than a mouse"(pity they didn't tell us) while the rules list just said "be realistic"
Anyway I hope the curators can come to a better conclusion which at least has evidence to promote that my piece is too large for our exhibition rather than just assuming everybody should be making art 2ft x 2ft like Joze.

Questionario

Makli has come up with a questionnaire that will be put to the people in groups 3 & 4!
Responses will follow shortly.

1) How do you find the First Year Studies so far?

2) What did you think about that project? Was it difficult to develop an idea?

3) What was the idea of making that final piece?

4) What materials did you use?

5) Were you inspired by an artist? If yes, who?

6) Did you find hard to cooperate with other students of your group?

7) Are you satisfied with your work on that project?

8) Make a wish for the exhibition.

So far...getting there

Well, I'm pretty tired, don't know about anyone else!
Malcolm has started doing mini clips of people talking about their ideas.
It's pretty amusing.

We have to finish our pieces for Mon 9th for them to be photographed and put in the exhibition Catalogue.

LEZ GOOOO!!

a really cool site for ideas, that is updated almost hourly:

This is the documentation of eca's FYS Groups 3 & 4, whilst we all frantically try and create something marvvveelllouuuss for the Exhibition 'So Far...' on Fri 13th November.

The exhibition will be held at the Art Complex, St. Margarets House located in the East End of Edinburgh.

Our brief states that our piece has to be:

Black & White with one colour

We cannot spend one penny of our own money on materials...

The title of the individuals work is 'So far...' finished with whatever their piece relates to..
e.g 'So far...I've eaten 79.5 pies since 2008'.

Keep your eyes peeled for images, video, interviews and much more content from the amazing eca FYS students and of course the Documentation team:
